The caves of Maxange

At the heart of the tertiary era

The Caves of Maxange, in the Dordogne Valley, are surprising in many ways.

From their history already, which is not commonplace. In 1984, Angel Caballero decided to take over the family business, a stone quarry opened by his father Maximilien in 1960 in the commune of Le Buisson de Cadouin. 16 years later, in 2000, Angel sees a strange crack in the cliff. He doesn’t know it yet, but this rift will change his life and that of his family.
After a few weeks of hesitation, he decides to infiltrate through this mysterious hole. After only a few meters of difficult progression, a breathtaking gallery is offered to his eyes. It is August 15, 2000.

Stalactites, stalagmites, numerous panels of aragonite covering entire walls, fistulas of extreme finesse are all there.
But what stands out is this unique profusion of rare crystallizations called “eccentric”, which literally defy the laws of gravity. Usually observed by small quantities, one contemplates them here by thousands on nearly 90 meters. After a long reflection, Angel decides to do everything to make this unique place accessible to all. But transforming a quarry into a public site is not easy.
It will take almost 2 years of work to develop the exterior and make the interior accessible.

In 2009, a new gallery was opened to the public but not everything has been explored and we like to think that new discoveries are to come.

In 2013, the state decided to classify Maxange for its geological and picturesque character and the Michelin guide awarded it two stars.

Today, Maxange is a site that delights young and old and is recognized as one of the most beautiful concretion caves in France.

Open from the first day of the Easter vacations to the last day of the All Saints’ Day vacations. Last visits 30 to 40 minutes before closing time.
